Varicose veins can be not only cosmetically unappealing but also painful and are usually caused from chronic venous insufficiency. They are treated in the office with either laser, foam, or removal. The treatment is painless. The large varicose veins do place you at risk for a deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

One of the most common causes of venous insufficiency is varicose veins. Varicose veins happen when your veins become enlarged and to the surface appear to be swollen or raised. Many times these veins are painful for patients.

Potential causes for varicose veins include:

  • Standing for long periods of time

  • Being over the age of 50

  • Obesity

  • Pregnancy

  • Menopause

  • Family History of Varicose Veins

Venous Insufficiency affects nearly 50% of the adult population. However, the majority go undiagnosed.

 

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is another common cause of venous insufficiency. This serious condition happens when a blood clot forms in the vein. These blood clots typically form in the thigh or lower leg.

Potential causes for DVT include:

  • Reduced Physical Activity

  • Injury

  • Surgery

  • Certain Medications

How Venous Insufficiency is Diagnosed

Venous insufficiency is diagnosed by performing an ultra-sound vein screening on the troubled area. Our registered vascular technologist will ultra-sound the legs to look for any issues and then will create a vein mapping in order to get a complete picture of the veins. Through this process, our team will be able to fully exam the veins and make a proper diagnosis.

Treatment for Venous Insufficiency

There are a variety of treatment options for venous insufficiency including Varithena Foam, Laser, Radio Frequency Ablation and Venaseal. At Harrison Heart, Vein & Vascular, we use Varithena Foam to treat venous insufficiency. This treatment is our preference because it painless for the patient and insurance companies cover the treatment.

The procedure is done in office and the patient can go home immediately after the procedure.
